Dance: DTH commercial more than just another ad

The new Dance Theatre of Harlem commercial, dubbed “The Movement” is more than just another ad.

The commercial is to promote DTH’s upcoming New York season at City Center (April 4, 6, 7). But this is actually a special production in a number of ways.

The commercial features a special singing performance by Broadway’s Billy Porter. But beyond the singing are the performances and the rich setting of the video itself.

Founder Arthur Mitchell was inspired to start DTH after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The video begins with current DTH students looking at news clips from the King assassination. From there, we are taken on a journey that shows us today’s students as well as DTH dancers from the past (thanks to footage shown on a television set in the studio).

It’s all beautifully done, with a rich poignance that recalls the best of what DTH is all about.

It’s definitely worth a look.
