Dance: Major promotions and other notables to watch

Before we start to look ahead to the 2017-18 season, let’s look at the close of the 2016-17 dance season and the news from many companies who announced major promotions.

At American Ballet Theatre, Calvin Royal III was promoted to soloist. Royal, has been an audience favorite since he was a finalist at the Youth American Grand Prix Scholarship Competition in 2006.joined ABT

A native of Tampa, Royal began his formal dance training at age 14. He joined the ABT Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School in September 2006 and just over a year later was accepted into ABT II (now known as the ABT Studio Company).

He was named an apprentice to ABT in October 2010 and was promoted to the corps de ballet in April 2011.
His repertoire with ABT includes Espada in “Don Quixote,” Persian Man in “The
Golden Cockerel,” the Recruit in Alexei Ratmansky’s “The Nutcracker,” Carnival Dancer in “Othello,” and Benvolio in “Romeo and Juliet.”

ABT also announced the promotions of Sarah Lane, Christine Shevchenko and Devon Teuscher to the rank of Principal dancer.

Over at New York City Ballet, India Bradley, who some may remember from her time training at Dance Theatre of Harlem before moving to the School of American Ballet last year, was announced as one of the company’s eight new apprentices along with Darius Black. Black is familiar to Pennsylvania Ballet fans from his years as a student performing as one of the “Nutcracker” princes in the Pennsylvania Ballet’s production of “The Nutcracker.”

It’s worth noting that both companies also have some young corps de ballet members to keep an eye on including Erica Lall (seen in the photo above with Darius Black) and Gabe Stone Shayer at American Ballet Theatre, and Rachel Hutsell at New York City Ballet.
