Dance: DanceAfrica Founder Chuck Davis Dies

Chuck DavisChuck Davis, the exuberant founder of the traveling festival known as DanceAfrica and founder of the African American Dance Ensemble of Durham, North Carolina,  died Sunday. He was 80.

Davis was a leader in bringing dances learned from his extensive travels across the African continent to dancers and audiences across the United States. Through  DanceAfrica, which he founded 40 years ago, Davis not only celebrated the richness of various African cultures but presented artists from across the United States as well as from across Africa.

A generation of dancers also learned about the richness of traditional African dance through dance companies Davis started. He founded the Chuck Davis Dance Company in New York in 1968. In 1984 he launched the African American Dance Ensemble in Durham, North Carolina where it continues to operate.

DanceAfrica will celebrate its 40th anniversary Memorial Day weekend at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The festival is also presented in Chicago, Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., Denver, Dallas and Columbus, Ohio.
