Diahann Carroll has abruptly pulled out of the eagerly anticipated Broadway revival of Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin In The Sun.” Previews are to begin March 8 at the Barrymore Theatre. The official opening is scheduled for April 3 and the show is to play a limited run.
Carroll, 78, was expected to be part of a superstar cast that also includes Denzel Washington as Walter Lee Younger, Sophie Okenedo as his wife, Ruth, and Anika Noni Rose as his sister Beneatha. This would have been Carroll’s return to Broadway after a 30 year absence.
In a statement, Carroll said she was leaving, “due to the demands of the vigorous rehearsal schedule and the subsequent eight-performances-a-week playing schedule,” according to Philip Rinaldi, a spokesman for the production.
Carroll will be replaced by LaTanya Richardson Jackson (actor Samuel L. Jackson’s wife), who has worked extensively in film and television and appeared in the 2009 Broadway revival of August Wilson’s “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.”
