On Thursday, Jan. 23, actress Krystal Joy Brown will join the Broadway cast of “Motown The Musical” to play the lead role of Diana Ross. She replaces Tony Award nominee Valisia LeKae who left the show in December after several leaves because of illness culminating with her being diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Brown’s Broadway credits include “Leap of Faith,” for which she earned a Fred Astaire award nomination and roles in “Big Fish” and “Hair.”

In addition to “Motown the Musical” playing on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre (205 West 46th Street), the show is also set to kick off its national tour with an extended run in Chicago, April 22-July 13 at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre.

In other “Motown” related news, the prestigious Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem will be hosting a cultural exhibit celebrating Motown. Called “Motown: The Truth is a Hit,” the Motown exhibit will open Feb. 1 and remain on display through July 26. The exhibit will include videos and audio recordings and artifacts from throughout Motown’s history. The exhibit is produced in partnership with the Motown Museum, the Schomburg Center and “Motown the Musical.

“What a great moment to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement by kicking off our 2014 exhibition season with The Truth is a Hit,” says Dr. Khalil Gibran Muhammad, Director of the Schomburg Center. “It is impossible to tell the story of that era without the soundtrack of Motown. As the country’s foremost repository of black culture–from books and art to photographs and, of course, music. We look forward to inviting patrons of all ages to learn more about the music that helped make the movement.”

The Schomburg Center is located at 515 Malcolm X Boulevard and 135th Street in New York.
