The national tour of “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess,” which won the 2012 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival, will launch Nov. 10 at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Theatre.

The tour will star Alicia Hall Moran as Bess and Nathaniel Stampley as Porgy.  The touring production will be accompanied by a 23-piece orchestra and is scheduled to travel to more than 20 cities in the first year including Los Angeles, Seattle, Dallas, Tampa, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Las Vegas and Charlotte.

In a promo released to publicize the tour, director Diane Paulus said the tour was a long overdue opportunity to have audiences across the country see an important work of art.

“To me, this work belongs to our cultural history in America,” she said. “We had this incredible opportunity to do this production on Broadway, where we won the Tony Award, and, now, this chance for this same production to be brought all across America is, to me, the most exciting part of our journey yet.

“To bring this great American classic to audiences all across America who deserve the opportunity to see this – not just in an opera house, but as a musical, where it started back in its history on Broadway in the ’30s – it’s coming full-circle back to its life as a great American musical.

The production was somewhat controversial during its nine-month-long run on Broadway following a world premiere at Boston’s American Repertory Theater. The production was a new adaptation of the original by George and Ira Gershwin with a revised book by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, new musical arrangements by Diedre L. Murray and choreography by Ronald K. Brown.
